Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for dermatology NPs and PAs, as well as other NPs and PAs, such as those practicing in primary care, who are engaged in the care of patients with systemic mastocytosis. 

Program Learning Goal

The goal of this educational activity is to improve the knowledge and competence of NP and PA learners in managing patients with systemic mastocytosis. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize SM potential diagnosis in patients presenting with a wide range of unexplained symptoms to reduce delays in treatment

  • Implement expert guideline recommended criteria into the diagnosis and subtyping of SM

  • Appraise the clinical safety and efficacy data for new and emerging targeted therapies for SM

  • Develop patient education and shared decision-making strategies to reduce the associated burden of SM

I have 29 years of experience as a board certified and recertified allergist with over 285 publications related to areas of my expertise. I am a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Cincinnati and partner of Bernstein Allergy Group and Bernstein Clinical Research Center. I see many patients, do multicenter clinical trials as well as hypothesis generated research and teach. My area of expertise is treatment of severe disease including asthma, difficult to treat chronic rhinitis, recurrent sinusitis with or without polyps, urticaria, angioedema including hereditary and acquired forms, atopic and contact dermatitis and other skin eruptions, food allergy including food challenges and oral immunotherapy, drug allergy including challenges and desensitizations, immunodeficiency (which may include neuropsychiatric disorders such as idiopathic autoimmune encephalopathy aka PANDAS/PANS), mast cell disorders with or without dysautonomia, eosinophilia disorders, environmental disorders including mold related illnesses, women’s health issues including progesterone hypersensitivity, seminal plasma hypersensitivity and chronic vulvovaginal candida hypersensitivity, idiopathic anaphylaxis and other complex unexplained disorders. My practice is a referral center for patients around the country.

Dr. Kristine Kucera is a Physician Associate with Lockhart Matter Dermatology. She is clinically involved with the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of general dermatologic patients with a special interest in psoriasis. Dr. Kucera spent one year training in plastic and reconstructive surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston before deciding to pursue her interest in dermatology. She has been practicing dermatology in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area for 25 years. She lectures nationally to colleagues on several dermatologic conditions and is currently serving on the Advisory Council for the Dermatology Education Foundation. Dr. Kucera has been appointed as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Physician Assistant Program and an Adjunct Clinical Instructor at University of North Texas Health Science Center. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Texas Academy of Physician Assistants, and Past President of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
